It would’ve been a crime against cinema and the Hobbit if Benedict Cumberbatch didn’t voice Smaug in the film franchise, but it looks like it was never in any doubt as soon as he stepped into the audition. He totally owns it and if you were Peter Jackson you’d want him right away.
An interesting piece of trivia you also get from the video is that both Cumberbath and his Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman were both auditioning for The Hobbit when they were filming the BBC series.
