Russian Roulette: The Invasion of Ukraine
Ukraine could be on the brink of civil war—after the Russians annexed Crimea the next place they decided to sow dissent was in Donetsk in Ukraine. This region is now being called the Donetsk People’s Republic, as pro-Russian militants form a barricade around the city. A few weeks back, on only the second day of this new, self-proclaimed state, Ukrainians gathered in the Regional Administration Building to discuss their new government and make plans for the future.
VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky was at the meeting and spoke with the current governor of Donetsk to find out what the actual residents of the region think of this declaration of independence (spoiler: they’re not particularly supportive). The video is made all the more pertinent because Ostrovsky was recently taken hostage by pro-Russian gunmen, and is being held in the city of Slavyansk under charges of spying.
