In case you weren’t aware and you can’t be bothered to look it up on Wikipedia, The Blue Marble is a photo of earth taken by the crew of the Apollo 17 spacecraft on December 7, 1972 from around 45,000 kilometres way. You’ll recognize the photo if you see it, it’s the one where the earth looks like a blue marble. In this short 17 minute doc astronauts discuss the Overview Effect, which is the effect seeing earth from space has upon their attitude to humans and the planet once they’ve witnessed such a majestic sight.

In 1947 Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl took off on an expedition across the Pacific Ocean starting from South America and completing in the Polynesian Islands, a journey of 4,300 miles undertaken in a balsa wood raft called Kon-Tiki. It was an epic undertaking which was turned into a film by two Norwegian filmmakers — this is a breakdown of over 500 VFX they used in making it.
