Two of the best characters from Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ were the walking box-robots TARS and CASE—and it turns out that instead of being entirely CGI like you might have thought, they were actually puppeteer-controlled practical effects. This behind-the-scenes video shows how they were designed and controlled and what and when CGI was used.

Nolan and other crew members talk about the “minimalist approach” to designing these military bots, which they describe as “articulated planks.”
