The Evolution of the Word Dude from 1880s to the Present
Dude! Prior to Bill and Ted the word dude wasn’t always associated with surfers and excellent adventures, in fact the etymology of it shows that way back when in the 1880s the word was used to describe what we now refer to as hipsters. It was used to describe a person who was a shallow, fashion-obsessed dandy.
It then evolved to refer to a “cool guy” and in the 80s was when it got associated with California laidback style.
