The old time travel cliche about going back in time to kill history’s most notorious mass murderer (aka Hitler) isn’t touched upon in this impressive time travel sci-fi short. But why would it be when this has far more original ideas it plays with. The concept for the short film is that time travel spreads like a virus does.

So one guy, a fugitive, uses the 1-5 second time jumps to get away from a police raid. But escaping one tricky situation leads to finding himself in another.

Just for the sheer hell of it and as an interesting thought experiment, YouTube channel Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell have conjured up a very OTT way to wipe out human civilization and with it life on our planet as we know it. It doesn’t involve a super volcano or North Korea kicking off WWIII.

Instead Kurzgesagt thinks of another way to create an epic world-ending explosion, by figuring out what would happen if the Sun came to Earth.

If you were ever a fan of the British sci-fi comic book 2000 AD then you’ll know Strontium Dog. A long-running series it featured the character of Johnny Alpha, who’s a mutant bounty hunter with a bunch of crazy gadgets and weapons. Along with his Viking partner Wulf Sternhammer. It was created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, who also created 2000 AD’s most famous character Judge Dredd.

But while we might have had a Judge Dredd feature film (or two in fact) there hasn’t been a Strontium Dog one. But this fan made one is of a very high standard so should make fans happy. If only it was longer.

Getting people to Mars is something you may have read briefly about online but you probably don’t know the nitty-gritty of how it’s going to work. Elon Musk’s Space X is one company that wants to get humans to the red planet and they want to do it in a cost effective way, bringing down the cost of space travel.

So it needs to use the least amount of fuel to keep finances down. How will it do that? This video from Real Engineering explains.

Even though humans probably won’t be going to Mars for at least another 15 to 20 years or more, it seems everybody is obsessed with what conditions on the planet will be like. This latest video comes from Vox who take a look at ways a trip to the hostile red planet might end you.

And it’s not even Mars itself, but the journey there and take-off are filled with dangers.

As this shocking video reveals, robot abuse is happening and it seems to only be getting worse. And it’s being perpetrated by the very people who should be looking out for these autonomous machines, their creators. They may justify their actions by saying they’re “testing” the robots, but is that really an excuse?

YouTube science channel ‘Kurz Gesagt – In a Nutshell’ looks at the concept know as the Fermi Paradox, which basically states that if the universe is so damn old and so damn big with trillions of stars, why have we not met any aliens yet? Or found any sign of their existence? And what does it mean for our own future? This video takes a look at this and questions whether they’ve existed and been wiped out or whether our tech is just to primitive to communicate with them.

Elon Musk talked recently about his Interplanetary Transport System that he hopes will take humans to Mars within the next ten years. He wants to then use it as a base to explore the galaxy. But manned spaced flight is not the only way. Way before Elon Musk scientists proposed the idea of the von Neumann machines, self-replicating probes that could travel from planet to planet rebuilding themselves from resources they find along the way.

In this Ted Ed talk Roey Tzezana explains how they work while Eoin Duffy provides the visuals.

Some people are working on robots that can go into disaster sites or nuclear meltdown areas and do valiant work that is just way too dangerous for people to do. Other people, like this guy, are creating robots that constantly and ceaselessly shines a laser in your eye. And kudos to his engineering skills, because he builds it in his bedroom.

But then he tests it out on himself, and lives to regret it.

Robots are nothing if not precise, but that doesn’t mean to say you would trust one with not stabbing you through the hand if it was performing a game of five-finger fillet with an actual knife. YouTuber Irfon Automation does however, putting his faith in a Staubli TX40 Robot and his neighbor’s programming to enable this metal arm to do passes of five-finger fillet.

Anyway, they captured it all on video and no blood was shed so that can only be a good thing.
